The continual focus for English through our Literacy blocks at Leinster Community School is to teach, assess and report on the Western Australian Curriculum English content, explicitly focusing on age-appropriate instruction for students on phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, independent and modelled writing and comprehension.
Leinster Community School strives for excellence in teaching, learning and assessment through whole school English programs. At Leinster Community School the early years teachers support the learning of foundational reading and writing skills through a synthetic approach to the teaching of phonics alongside a rich literature and vocabulary component.
Teachers engage all students from Pre-Primary to Year 2 in the InitiaLit program to ensure a consistent approach across classrooms, InitiaLit is an evidence-based program that aligns with the West Australian English curriculum.
Our kindergarten students are exposed to early communication skills through the PreLit program.
Talk for Writing has been a priority for a few years and is making a significant influence on the oral language and writing skills of all students at our school. The NSW font is used for handwriting.
Novel studies are a focus in all year levels to develop a love for reading and integrate a deep understanding of literacy, literature and language.
Students in Year 3-6 are assessed on their spelling and grouped to work at their level of expertise with the Spelling Mastery program.
